AOLnet Local Access Numbers Reference Guide was designed for mobile Newton users who travel to various cities across the United States and need a quick way to find the local AOLnet phone number to send/receive EMail to America Online™ via Aloha.
How To Install
The AOLnet Reference Guide is a Newton Book developed with Newton Press. You can install a Newton Book just like any other Newton Package using the Newton Backup Utility (2.0 users) or Newton Connection Kit (1.3 users)

AOLnet Reference Guide Introduction
1. Open up the Extras Drawer. You will find a Newton Book titled "AOLnet".
2. Tap the AOLnet Icon to launch the AOLnet Reference Guide.
3. You will see a title page. At the bottom of the page you will find the date this document was last updated.
4. The first time you refer to the AOLnet Reference Guide, please read the Important Information on pages 2 and 3. (From the title page simple tap the silk screened down arrow to advance to each page.)
To Find a Local Number
There are three ways to find a local number in the AOLnet Reference Guide.
A. Newton's Find Button - The Fastest Way!
B. Table of Contents - Quick and Easy!
C. Scrolling - The Slowest Way!
A. Use Newton's Find Button. (The fastest way!)
1. Tap the find button. A find slip will appear.
2. Write in the city you are looking for.
3. Make sure the "Where" option is selected to "AOLnet."
4. Tap the "Find" button on the find slip
5. An overview will be displayed showing a list of found items.
6. Tap one of the items to select it and Newton will take you to that cities listing and highlight it for you.
Note1: If you perform a "find" and Newton reports "Not found in AOLnet", then you can use "Method B" to find the closest city to your location or you may want to use the 800 access number provided by America Online™. Remember! There is a surcharge for using the 800 access number! Refer to America Online for current surcharge pricing!
Note2: Newton 1.3 owners may not want to use this option as the "find" process can sometimes take longer than "Method B" listed below.
B. Using the Table of Contents
AOLnet Reference Guide uses links in the Table of Contents to quickly take you to the state your city is located.
1. To find a local number for the city you are in tap the silk screened overview button (sometimes called the belly button) to get the Table of Contents.
2. You will see a list of states. Scroll through the list (using the silk screened up and down arrows) until you find the state of the city you are in.
3. Tap the state and AOLnet will take you to the First page the state appears.
Note1: If the cities listed for the state you selected are longer than one page, you will see one of three indicators in the upper right hand corner of each page.
A [>] mark indicates there are additional cities listed for this state on the next page (Indicates the first page of a multi-page state listing)
As you move to the next page you may see these two marks [<] [>] which indicates that the list continues on the previous page and the next page (Indicates middle page(s) of a multi-page state listing)
If you see a [<] it indicates that the list continues on the previous page (Indicates the last page of a multi-page state listing.)
Note2: These are not "active" marks that you can tap to go forward or backward, they are only indicators to easily alert you that the cities shown are only a partial list. If you can't find your city on the page shown on the screen, check to see if there is an indicator for additional listings.
3. Cities are listed alphabetically. Scroll through the list until you find the city you are located in.
C. Scrolling
1. As with any Newton Book, you can simply scroll through each page until you find the state and city you are looking for.
2. You can also use Newton Book's book mark feature (The little icon that looks like an open book between the "i" icon and the "annotate" icon.) to mark pages that list cities or states you visit frequently. Then at a later time, you can tap use the book mark feature to return to that page by tapping on the page that you have previously marked)
Using AOLnet Reference Guide with Aloha
1. Find the city you are located in with any of the three listed methods above.
2. Highlight the just the phone number (note the area code) with your pen (stylist) and drag this number over to the edge of the screen to copy to Newton's clipboard. (You will hear a "tin can" sound when the text is copied to the clipboard.)
3. Close AOLnet and open up the Extras Drawer.
4. Find the In Box and tap it to open. (The In Box is in the "Unfiled Icons" folder by default. If you can't find the In Box, you may have moved it. An easy way to find the In Box is to tap the "Unfiled Icons" folder tab and select "All Icons".)
5. Tap the "i" Information icon and tap on Aloha Prefs.
6. Make sure "AOLnet" is selected under the Network Preference.
7. Scrub out the current phone number in the Phone # Preference.
8. Place you pen (stylist) on the text that you placed in the clipboard (This should still be on the edge of the screen) and drag it to the Phone # field. (You should hear a rubber squeak sound as you pull it off the clipboard)
Note: If this is a city you frequently visit, Aloha allows you to save numbers in a pop-up menu for quick selection at a later time. You may want to do this at this time.
Simply add a "@" sign and the city name after the phone number. (Aloha ignores anything after the "@" sign during dialing.
Tap the Phone # diamond and a popup menu will appear. Tap Add to Popup!
You now have easy access to this cities local number the next time you're in this city!
9. Close Aloha Preferences and connect to your Email by following the instructions that came with Aloha! When you tap on Receive (In Box) or Send (Out Box) the new number you added for this city will show up in the Connect Options Slip!
10. Enjoy quick and easy dialing for your America Online Email when traveling with Aloha and the AOLnet Reference Guide!
